What reels and shorts editing involves
Reels and Shorts are vertical videos, usually under a minute, that appear in fast-scrolling feeds on Instagram, YouTube and Facebook. The viewer decides almost instantly whether to keep watching, so the edit has a very specific job: grab attention immediately, deliver one clear idea, and end before interest drops.
Editing short-form well is less about flashy effects and more about ruthless selection. We choose the strongest moment to open with, cut every pause and repetition, add captions so the message works with the sound off, and pace the video so something changes on screen every few seconds. The result feels effortless to watch, even though a lot of decisions went into it.
Who uses short-form editing
Almost any business with a phone camera can produce raw material for reels. The challenge is turning it into something watchable on a regular schedule. Typical clients include:
- Real estate agencies sharing property walkthroughs, location highlights and quick market explainers.
- Clinics and doctors answering common patient questions in 30-second clips.
- D2C brands showing products in use, unboxings and behind-the-scenes packing.
- Coaching institutes posting short tips, topper interviews and exam-season reminders.
- Restaurants and cafés showcasing dishes, kitchen moments and new menu launches.
- Jewellery shops presenting new collections with close-up detail shots.
If you already run social accounts, reels usually fit into a wider content plan. Our social media management team can handle planning and posting while we focus on the edit.
What’s included in each reel
- Hook-first structure: the most interesting line or visual moved to the opening seconds.
- Tight cutting: pauses, filler words and repeated takes removed so the pace stays high.
- Styled captions: on-screen text in your brand fonts and colours, placed clear of platform buttons.
- Music and sound: tracks from properly licensed libraries or platform-approved audio, balanced under the voice.
- Text overlays and simple graphics: prices, key points or a call to action where they help.
- Cover frame: a clean thumbnail frame so the reel looks tidy on your profile grid.
Formats and exports
Reels and Shorts are delivered in 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920, exported as MP4 (H.264) for broad compatibility. We keep important text inside the central safe area so it is not hidden behind captions, usernames or the like and share buttons. If you also want a square or 4:5 version for feed posts, we reframe the edit rather than simply letterboxing it.
How we deliver it, step by step
- Brief: you share the goal of the video, your brand style and any reference reels you like.
- Footage handover: raw clips are shared through Google Drive or a similar link, in the highest quality your phone or camera recorded.
- First cut: we build the edit with hook, captions and music, and send a preview link.
- Revisions: you comment with timestamps; we apply changes in an agreed number of revision rounds.
- Approval and export: final files are exported per platform and shared with the caption text if needed.
For regular work we set up a template for captions, intro frames and end cards. That keeps a month of reels looking like one consistent account and speeds up every future edit.
Tools we use
Most reels are cut in Adobe Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve, with After Effects for animated text or branded graphics. For quick-turnaround social edits that need platform-style effects, CapCut is sometimes the right tool. We choose based on the job rather than habit, and we only use fonts, music and stock footage that are licensed for commercial use.
What affects timeline and cost
- Volume: a batch of reels from one shoot is more efficient than one-off edits.
- Footage quality and organisation: well-lit, clearly labelled clips take less time than hours of unsorted material.
- Graphics: animated text, product callouts and custom transitions add editing time.
- Scripting: if you need help writing hooks or structuring the message, that is extra work before editing starts.
- Turnaround: urgent same-day or next-day delivery needs to be planned in advance.
We quote after seeing a sample of your footage and the number of reels you plan to publish each month.
Common short-form mistakes we avoid
- Opening with a logo animation or a slow greeting instead of the actual point.
- Placing captions at the very bottom, where platform buttons cover them.
- Using a trending song that has nothing to do with the brand, or one that isn’t cleared for business use.
- Exporting a horizontal video with black bars instead of reframing it for vertical.
- Cramming three messages into one reel instead of making three reels.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a reel be?
As long as the idea needs and no longer. Many effective reels are between 15 and 45 seconds. We cut to the content rather than to a fixed length, and we will tell you if a piece of footage would work better as two shorter reels.
Can you edit footage shot on a phone?
Yes. Most reels we edit are shot on phones. Recording in good light, holding the phone vertically and recording clean audio makes the biggest difference to the final result.
Do you use trending audio?
Where it suits your brand and is available for business accounts, yes. Otherwise we use properly licensed music, which avoids muted videos or copyright claims later.
Can one edit work for Instagram, YouTube Shorts and Facebook?
The same 9:16 edit works on all three, but we check caption placement and length for each platform and can export separate versions if needed.
Do I get the project files?
We deliver final exports by default. If you want editable project files or caption templates for your own team, let us know at the start so we can set them up accordingly.
