Google Display Ads

Display ads show image and responsive ads across websites and apps in Google’s network. We run them with tight audience and placement control, and we will tell you plainly when Display is not the right tool.

What Google Display Ads are

The Google Display Network covers a very large range of websites, apps and Google-owned properties such as Gmail and YouTube. Display campaigns use images, logos and short text, often as responsive display ads that Google assembles into many sizes automatically.

Because the reach is so wide, Display can deliver cheap impressions quickly, which is exactly the risk. Without controls, ads can end up in mobile games, parked domains or content you would never want next to your brand. Our approach is to decide who should see the ads and where they should not appear before launch, rather than cleaning up after the first report.

When Display makes sense

  • Retargeting people who visited your site but did not enquire, such as prospective students checking course pages or buyers viewing a property project.
  • Awareness for a new product, launch or event in a defined region.
  • Staying visible during long B2B buying cycles, where a manufacturer wants to remain in front of engineers and purchase teams who researched them.
  • Supporting Search, reaching people with related interests who are not yet searching.
Display is rarely the best channel for direct cold lead generation. If your goal is immediate enquiries from new people, we will usually recommend Search or Meta first and use Display to support them.

What’s included

  • Audience strategy: your data segments, custom segments, in-market and affinity audiences, topics or placements.
  • Content exclusions and placement exclusions applied at launch, including sensitive content categories and low-quality app placements where appropriate.
  • Responsive display ads plus uploaded image ads in commonly served sizes.
  • Frequency management so the same person is not shown the ad excessively.
  • Conversion tracking, including view-through data read with appropriate caution.
  • Regular placement reviews, with new exclusions added from actual delivery data.

Brand safety as part of setup

Before launch we decide which content categories, site types and app placements are unsuitable for your brand and exclude them at account or campaign level. After launch, the placement report shows where ads actually appeared, and anything irrelevant or low quality is added to the exclusion list. For a clinic or school, that might mean keeping ads away from sensational content; for a B2B manufacturer, away from children’s games that produce accidental clicks and no enquiries.

How we run Display campaigns

  1. Agree the objective: retargeting, awareness or prospecting, since each needs different targeting and success measures.
  2. Build audiences from site visitors, customer lists and relevant Google audience segments.
  3. Apply exclusions for content, placements and categories that do not suit your brand.
  4. Produce creative in the sizes that actually receive inventory, with a clear message and call to action.
  5. Launch with controlled budgets and review where the ads really appeared.
  6. Refine audiences, exclusions and creative based on conversions rather than click-through rate alone.

Tools we use

Campaigns are managed in Google Ads, with audiences built from GA4 and Google Ads data segments. Tags are deployed through Google Tag Manager, and placement and conversion reports are brought into Looker Studio if you want one view across channels.

What affects results, timeline and cost

Display results depend on audience quality, creative, frequency and, for retargeting, how much qualified traffic your site already receives. A retargeting campaign cannot be larger than the audience feeding it. Clicks on Display are often cheaper than on Search, but cheaper clicks are not automatically better value, so we judge campaigns on enquiries, sales or assisted conversions.

Setup usually takes days rather than weeks once creative is ready, and a few weeks of placement data show where to tighten. Management effort depends on how many audiences and creative sets are involved; media spend is paid to Google directly.

Display is also a useful place to measure incrementally: we can compare regions or time periods with and without Display running to judge whether it adds value, rather than relying only on platform-attributed numbers.

Common Display mistakes

  • Leaving all placements open and discovering weeks later where the money went.
  • Judging success on click-through rate, which accidental clicks on apps can inflate.
  • Uploading one image size, so the ads miss much of the available inventory.
  • No frequency control, so a small retargeting audience sees the same banner constantly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I choose exactly which websites my ads appear on?

Yes, placement targeting lets you choose specific sites, though it limits reach. More commonly we target audiences and exclude unsuitable placements and content categories.

Is Display good for lead generation?

It can support lead generation, mainly through retargeting, but cold Display traffic usually converts less readily than Search or Meta. We will recommend it only where it fits your objective.

Do you design the banners?

Yes. We produce the creative in the sizes and formats Display needs, or adapt your existing brand assets.

What is a view-through conversion?

It is a conversion from someone who saw the ad but did not click it. It can indicate influence, but it is not proof, so we report it separately from click-based conversions.

How is Display different from Performance Max?

Display campaigns run only on the Display Network with the targeting you set. Performance Max spreads a single campaign across several Google channels automatically, with less placement control.
